High-level Commemorative Event: 60th Anniversary of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Afternoon) ICERCat60 . On December 21, 1965, through Resolution 2106 (XX) the United Nations General Assembly adopted the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD), marking a pivotal moment in the global fight against racism.   This segment will reflect on progress achieved and challenges at the international, regional, national and local levels in the fight against racial discrimination. It will highlight the central role played by international and regional human rights mechanisms, including CERD , as well as the contributions of local governments, national human rights institutions, civil society organizations and grassroots movements in advancing the objectives of the Convention. The segment will provide a space to exchange experiences and to identify good and promising practices in implementing the Convention and addressing persistent and emerging challenges, including but not limited to instances of State disengagement from human rights obligations and mechanisms, the resurgence of racist hate speech and xenophobic discourse, the impact of new digital technologies, the consequences of environmental degradation and climate change on communities most exposed to racial discrimination.   11:3...

Panel Discussion 2: 60 Years of ICERD: Realizing the Promise of Equality Without Distinction as to Race, Colour, Descent, or National or Ethnic Origin.

  This segment will place particular focus on the lived realities of various persons and communities – including but not limited to people of African descent, Indigenous Peoples, people of Asian descent, Roma, minorities, migrants, asylum seekers and refugees – who continue to face persistent and intersecting forms of discrimination based on race, colour, descent, national or ethnic origin, sex, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, language and other grounds. It will also consider how the enduring legacies of slavery and colonialism, coupled with the growing contestation of measures aimed at advancing racial equality — such as special measures, reparations, diversity policies, and education against racism and intolerance — challenge the effective realization of the Convention ’s objectives.   During its 116th session (17 November to 5 December 2025), the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) will hold a High-level Event to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the adoption of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) . Over the past six decades since the adoption of ICERD by General Assembly resolution 2106 (XX) , progress has been made in the fight against racial discrimination at international, regional, national and local levels. While Member States committed themselves “to adopt all necessary measures for speedily eliminating racial discrimination in all its forms and manifestations ”, progress has not unfolded at the pace or to the extent envisioned, and many hard-won gains remain at risk of reversal.
