Panel Discussion 1: 60 Years of ICERD: From Global to Local Implementation – Progress and Challenges.
This segment will reflect on progress achieved and challenges at the international, regional, national and local levels in the fight against racial discrimination. It will highlight the central role played by international and regional human rights mechanisms, including CERD, as well as the contributions of local governments, national human rights institutions, civil society organizations and grassroots movements in advancing the objectives of the Convention. The segment will provide a space to exchange experiences and to identify good and promising practices in implementing the Convention and addressing persistent and emerging challenges, including but not limited to instances of State disengagement from human rights obligations and mechanisms, the resurgence of racist hate speech and xenophobic discourse, the impact of new digital technologies, the consequences of environmental degradation and climate change on communities most exposed to racial discrimination.
